Mission and
Core Values
The mission of the Greater Killeen Free Clinic is to use its
available resources to provide acute health care to children and
adults who are unserved, underserved, or have no access to health
care.
Health Care Advocacy: We
will be an open, unbiased advocate of health care that makes sense
to the community and meets the needs of clinic patients.
Accountability:
We will develop
a compassionate partnership with free clinic patients which
engenders shared responsibility and mutual accountability.
Social
Responsibility: We
will be a transparent organization open to any and all, being a good
steward of the clinic’s resources.
In 1993 a needs assessment of social service clients in Killeen, Texas, showed that transportation and affordable medical care were their top needs. A task force was formed to create a free clinic for the Killeen area. Many community leaders, medical practitioners, and other concerned citizens brought the idea to fruition in less than a year. In November, 1994 the free clinic began its operations on a Thursday evening. The board operated the clinic until January 1996 when an executive director was hired.
In 1999, the clinic expanded its operations to two evenings a week. All local pharmacies provided free filling of prescriptions from a low cost formulary until 2000, when that support began dwindling.
In 2007 over 2880 patient visits were made
to the Free Clinic. Volunteers donated over 1600 hours to serve
those in medical need.
Pharmaceutical
Assistance Program
Working in partnership with Metroplex Health System, Bell County
Indigent Health Services and several local physicians, the clinic
coordinates a program that enables low income, uninsured patients
with chronic illnesses to get free medications from pharmaceutical
companies. For more information, contact
Connie Hamill, PAP Coordinator, at
